The following was submitted by Janet (Sammon) McLemore in May 2015:
“Here is a copy of the C.E. Davis obit. It is transcribed from the records of Zion Masonic Lodge. This is the lodge where he was a member. It is no longer a functioning lodge but has been absorbed by another lodge. He was a farmer by occupation. Master Mason was the level he achieved in the Masonic Lodge. I was fortunate to have a current member obtain this for me.” Janet
Transcription of Obit, dated 19 Dec 1898:
“These notes of sorrow on the pages of the minute books are but natural, but one cannot help but feel a deep sense of loss at their passing. So the members of Zion must have felt as one by one their Brothers died and were gathered to the Grand Lodge of Heaven where the Supreme Grand Architect of the Universe presides.
A meeting was called December 19, 1898 to attend the funeral of Brother C.E. Davis. (Burial was in the Martin’s Prairie Cemetery) The following memorial was written in memory of Brother Davis.
In Memoriam of Brother C. E. Davis who died at his home in Grimes County, Texas on December 17, 1898 Charles Edward Davis. He was born in Lownds County, Alabama August 11, 1830. The subject of this sketch was a member of a family of eight children: Six girls & two boys. The oldest boy died in the Confederate army. C. E. migrated to Texas in 1852 with two of his sisters, one of whom Mrs. Pauline Conlee survives him, three other sisters still reside in Alabama.
Ed, as he was called served in the confederate army & was an Honored member of the Masonic fraternity & several years ago he professed faith in Christ. Brother Davis had few enemies, if any. Peace to thy ashes dear brother.
Committee: William Lyons & J. L. Edmunds”
“(*NOT IN LODGE RECORDS Charles Edward Davis was married to Jane Trant who survives him. Both are buried in Martins Prairie Cemetery at Keith.)
