We have a new little carrier soon to arrive that will be carrying our Mitochondrial DNA! :)

On or around the 24th of June, 2012, my wonderful niece Lindsay will be giving birth to our newest little family member, Lillian Joy! Unbeknownst to her, Lillian Joy will also be the newest carrier of our Mitochondrial DNA!

What is Mitochondrial DNA? Well, according to http://www.familytreedna.com, Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the genetic material found in mitochondria. It is passed down from females to both sons and daughters, but sons do not pass down their mother’s mtDNA to their children. So one needs to look to their mother, and her mother, and her mother, and so on.

I have been able to track my mtDNA line back several generations. Lillian Joy will share my mtDNA as well as my daughters, and a couple female cousins: Here are Lillian Joy’s mtDNA ancestors:

Lillian Joy; her mom Lindsay; and her mom Terri; and her mom Evelyn; and her mom Rachel Fay Sammon b1918, Texas; and her mom Lillian Priscilla Davis b1881, Texas; and her mom Jane Trant b1847, Totnes, Devon, England, UK; and her mum Elizabeth Jarvis b1809, East Allington, Devon, England, UK; and her mum Elizabeth Bath b1775 (same year as Jane Austen!), Woodleigh, Devon, England, UK; and her mum Elizabeth Lidstone b1747, South Milton, Devon, England, UK; and her mum Mary Jarvis bc1722 in Devon, England, UK!

There are at least two other special things about Lillian Joy:

One, she will be born in Norway (because her father is Norwegian) and Norway is just across the North Sea from England! So in a way she has taken her mtDNA back much closer to where it originated.

Two, she will have the same first name as her Great-Great-Grandmother Lillian Priscilla Davis, one of her mtDNA grandmothers!

We can’t wait to meet you Lillian!
